Climate conditions

The beautiful island of Mauritius enjoys tropical temperature all year round. It has an average temperature of 25° with two climate seasons; summer and winter. Consequently, summer starts from November to April and winter from May to October.

Seasons

Temperature in Mauritius varies between 15° C and 27 ° C on the Central Plateau, and between 17° C to 34° C on the coastal area. The sea temperature varies between 22°C in winter and 27° C in summer. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier than the East and the South. You can also feel the difference in temperature between the two seasons as the climate of Mauritius during summer is wet and on the other hand, it is dry during winter.

Sunrise and Sunset

The sunrise is at 05h30 and the sunset is at 19h00 during summer. The hours of daytime is around 8 hours generally depending on the weather conditions. Moreover, during winter the sunrise is at 06h45 and the sunset is at 17h30 with a shorter length of daytime period as well.

Cyclones

When we refer to cyclones in Mauritius, the weather conditions are generally very humid and turbulent.  This season occurs mostly during January and February. Therefore, the Mauritius Meteorological station listed some important guidelines in the event of a cyclone.

What to do before

  • Ensure that the play where you are staying is in good condition and can resist cyclone gusts.
  • Get rid of any loose material that may damage your property.
  • Find a secure place for your vehicles.
  • Prepare your emergency kit. (Essential food, water containers, medicines, essential tools and materials.)

What to do during

  • Listen to the radio or other media in order to monitor the cyclone bulletins.
  • Secure your windows and doors.

What to do after

  • Wait upon the approval of the relevant authorities in order to go out.
  • Boil water for drinking purposes.
  • Keep your garden and drain clean in order to avoid any expansion of mosquitoes.

Warning System

The list below is defined as the different alert levels for cyclones. (From Class 1 to Class 5)

  1. National warning of strong winds of 120 km/h which may affect Mauritius. The warning is issued 36 to 48 hours before.
  2. 12 hours of daylight before the strong winds of 120 km/h reaches Mauritius.
  3. Warning is issued 6 hours of daylight before the strong winds of 120 km/h reaches Mauritius.
  4. Statistics which show that the tropical cyclone with gusts of 120 km/h have been recorded in several places on the island.
  5. When the breeze exceeds 249 km/h.
